Edo, or Ẹ̀dó is also called Bini (Benin), a Volta-Niger language spoken primarily in Edo State, Nigeria. It was and remains the primary language of the Edo people of Igodomigodo. The Igodomigodo kingdom was renamed Edo by Oba (King) Eweka, after which the Edos refer to themselves as Oviedo 'child of Edo' (singular) or “ivbie Edo” (plural) and this comprises of all Edo State indigenous groups irrespective of their languages and or dialectical ethnographical unification of the Edo language. The Edo capital was Ubinu and some pool of thoughts said that the name “ubinu” was christened to the Edo people by the Yoruba ethnic groups who referred to the Edo people and their locations as the land of easily provoked and no nonsense group, hence “ile ibinu”. Edo is also known as Benin City to the Portuguese who first heard about it from the coastal Itsekhiri, who pronounced it this way; from this the kingdom came to be known as the Benin Empire in the West African African Regional countries.

Help sponsor our educational program videos or donate to sustain the Edo language world wide web programs.
